Uttarakhand Gears Up for Chardham Yatra 2026 with State-Wide Mock Drill on April 10

Mock Drill Scheduled Across Seven Districts on April 10

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) have begun preparations to handle any emergency during the upcoming Chardham Yatra 2026. As part of these efforts, a comprehensive mock drill has been scheduled for April 10 across seven districts connected to the pilgrimage route.

Purpose of the Drill: Testing Readiness at All Levels

The Secretary of Disaster Management, Vinod Kumar Suman, chaired a meeting at the SDMA and issued necessary instructions to officials regarding the mock drill. He noted that all departments have made strong preparations under the guidance and direction of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The Disaster Management Department is also on high alert.

The mock drill will cover seven districts connected to the Chardham Yatra route: Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Haridwar, Tehri, Pauri, and Dehradun. Major General Sudhir Bahal stated that the drill will be conducted under the Incident Response System (IRS).

Major General Sudhir Bahal emphasized that resource and risk mapping is essential to effectively respond to potential disasters during the Chardham Yatra. He stressed that GIS mapping of available resources and high-risk zones must be carried out so that quick action can be taken in case of an emergency. The mock drill will also test these mapping systems.

Ensuring Pilgrim Safety Along the Yatra Route

Major General Bahal also highlighted several measures critical for pilgrim safety. He noted that the accommodation capacity of hotels and dharamshalas must be fully assessed, so that in an emergency, pilgrims can be sheltered without difficulty. He further directed that timely weather alerts must be provided to pilgrims, and information about road conditions, landslide-prone zones, and high-risk areas should be made readily available.

Alternative Communication for Connectivity Gaps

For areas along the Chardham Yatra route where communication infrastructure is absent, Major General Bahal directed that alternative communication arrangements be made to ensure information exchange during emergencies. He also recommended that satellite-based communication options be explored for such locations.
