LPG Shortage Hits Wedding Season in Chamoli as Commercial Cylinders Run Dry

Cylinders Unavailable as Wedding Season Peaks

With over 50 weddings scheduled across Dewal block in Chamoli district this April, families are facing a severe shortage of commercial LPG cylinders. Two gas agencies — Tharali and Narayanbagad — serve more than 7,000 consumers in the area, but their vehicles have stopped making deliveries. Families needing commercial cylinders are being forced to travel to the agency warehouses, only to find that commercial stock is unavailable there as well.

Using Domestic Cylinders at Events is Illegal

The District Supply Officer issued a notice on April 2 to all gas agency managers and supply inspectors, making it clear that using domestic LPG cylinders at weddings, lawns, or catering events is a legal offence. Residents were urged to arrange commercial cylinders for any large-scale cooking at events. Local residents including Madan Mishra, whose son's wedding is on April 29, have complained that they have been unable to obtain cylinders despite multiple attempts.

Agencies Working to Restore Supply

Indane Gas Agency Manager Surendra Purohit confirmed that commercial cylinders have not yet arrived but expressed hope that they would be available soon. On Friday, the Indane Gas Service supplied domestic cylinders to Purna village in the block after a gap of nearly 24 days, with many consumers rushing to collect their cylinders. Meanwhile, staff at the Simli Indane Gas office have been active in conducting KYC updates and resolving consumer issues to ensure regular distribution.
