Lawyers Boycott Revenue Courts Over DM's Action Against Senior Advocate
Lawyers in Dehradun have taken a strong stand against District Magistrate (DM) Savin Bansal. In a general assembly held at the Bar Association on Saturday, advocates unanimously resolved to boycott all revenue court proceedings until the DM is transferred out of the district. The resolution came in protest against the DM's recommendation to cancel the licence of senior advocate and former Bar Association President Premchand Sharma.
A large number of lawyers attended the general assembly at Vidhi Bhavan, the main court complex in Dehradun, and strongly condemned what they termed an unjust action against a respected member of the bar. Speakers stated this was not a fight for any individual, but a fight for the dignity of the entire Bar Association. Court work including stamp vendors and typing services were completely halted on Saturday, significantly disrupting judicial proceedings.
What Happens Next: Lawyers to Continue Boycott Until Transfer
The Bar Association has made it clear that the agitation will continue as long as the DM remains in office. This is the first such major collective protest by Dehradun's legal community in recent years. Officials emphasised that any action threatening the dignity or rights of lawyers would not be tolerated, and they would continue to use constitutional means to ensure accountability.
