A School Stands Silent After Six Decades
The Government Primary School Pata, located in Bhatwari development block of Uttarkashi district, has permanently closed after 66 years. Established in 1960 following the creation of the district, the school served students for nearly five decades before the student count began to decline steadily over the past ten years.
The primary cause of the decline is the migration of rural families to urban areas in search of better educational opportunities. Last year, the school had only two students. After those students passed out this year, no new admissions were received, effectively bringing the school's 66-year journey to an end.
Three Schools, One Village — and Now Just One Remains
The village of Pata once had three government schools. Out of these, the Government Junior High School Pata was already shut down in the academic year 2023-24 after its student count fell to zero. The only remaining institution is the Government High School, which itself is now down to just two students and is facing closure as well.
Calls for Policy Reform in Rural Education
Retired teachers Pradyuman Nautiyal and Devendra Chauhan described the closure as deeply unfortunate. They stressed that the government must formulate appropriate policies to improve the education system and prevent such closures in rural areas.
Block Education Officer Harsha Rawat confirmed that a proposal has been received for closing the Government Primary School Pata due to no new admissions. The school is now officially considered closed.
