Hailstorms, Snow, and Chilling Winds: Uttarakhand Weather Turns Dramatic on April 8

Weather Alerts Issued Across Uttarakhand

The Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for several districts in Uttarakhand on April 8, warning of hailstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour. Districts including Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar are under this alert.

Snowfall Blankets Kedarnath and Yamunotri

While rain began falling across the plains since morning, snowfall continued at the sacred shrines of Kedarnath and Yamunotri Dham. Areas above 3,000 metres in altitude are likely to receive further snowfall in the coming days. The weather department indicated that this unseasonal shift in conditions is expected to persist for a few more days.

Temperatures Plunge as Cold Winds Grip Dehradun

On Tuesday, intermittent rain and cold winds caused the maximum temperature in Dehradun to drop by six degrees Celsius, recording only 25.4 degrees. The minimum temperature also fell by two degrees to 14.5 degrees Celsius. Clouds dominated the sky throughout the day, causing near-darkness at midday.

Role of Western Disturbance in the Sudden Weather Change

Meteorologists attribute this sudden weather shift to an active western disturbance. When a western disturbance becomes active, it brings moisture from the Arabian Sea and the Mediterranean region. This moisture leads to cloud formation, resulting in rain in the plains and snowfall at higher altitudes. The cold winds descending from the Himalayas further push down temperatures across both hilly and plain areas of Uttarakhand.
